What collagen stimulators do

Around the mid-20s to early 30s is a reasonable general range for skin collagen to begin declining in both women and men. Collagen stimulators are injected into the deep dermis or above the bone where they act as a scaffold; over weeks fibroblasts lay new collagen around it. The product itself is absorbed, and what remains is your own tissue.

Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) builds slowly over two to three sessions and suits broad volume loss across the temples, cheeks and lower face. Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) lifts immediately and keeps stimulating collagen; diluted, it is approved for the décolleté and used off-label for skin quality on the neck.

Because results come from your own collagen they look soft, and they cannot be dissolved, so Dr. Toma plans them conservatively and as a series.

On-labelSculptra Aesthetic is FDA-approved for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles, with cheek wrinkles added in April 2023. Radiesse is approved for facial wrinkles and folds, jawline contour (2021), the backs of the hands (2015) and, diluted 1:2, the décolleté (Mar 31, 2026; adults 22 and older; manufacturer training required). Labels verified Oct 2026.

Why a series

Collagen is built in layers. Two to three sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart give a smoother, more even result than one large dose, and lower the risk of nodules.

Cannot be dissolved

Unlike hyaluronic acid filler there is no reversal agent. This is why planning is conservative and why experience matters.

Who it is for

A good fit if
  • Broad volume loss across temples, cheeks and lower face
  • Loose or crepey skin on the jawline and neck
  • You prefer gradual change that reads as "rested"
  • You can commit to a series and maintenance
Not for you if
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection or inflammation at the site
  • Known allergy to any component, or keloid tendency
  • Autoimmune disease in flare
What it can't do
  • Give an instant result at the first visit (Sculptra)
  • Be dissolved if the result is not wanted
  • Replace a surgical lift for significant laxity

How much do Sculptra and Radiesse cost?

Sculptra is priced per vial and Radiesse per syringe, planned as a series. Your written quote lists sessions, vials or syringes per session, the total, the minimum fee and the dates it is in effect. Series plans require a deposit, applied to the first session.

Prices are confirmed at consultation and stated with their effective dates. Any offer carries its start and end dates. How pricing works.

What happens, step by step

  1. Consultation
    Assess and plan

Where collagen loss shows, how many sessions, and whether filler or neurotoxin should be combined.

  2. Session 1
    Treatment

45 minutes. Product is placed deep with a cannula. Massage five minutes, five times a day, for five days (Sculptra).

  3. Weeks 4 to 6
    Session 2

Early firming is visible. Second layer placed.

  4. Weeks 8 to 12
    Session 3 and review

Result builds as collagen matures. Photos compared.

  5. 12 to 24 months
    Maintenance

One session a year is typical to keep the result. Timing varies.

Risks and side effects

Common: swelling, bruising and tenderness for a few days; small bumps under the skin that settle with massage. Uncommon: delayed nodules or granulomas, more likely without massage or when placed too superficially. Rare but serious: vascular occlusion, as with any injectable. Diluted technique and cannula placement lower these risks.

Full informed consent is reviewed before treatment. Tell us about autoimmune conditions, previous permanent fillers and any upcoming dental work.

Questions about collagen stimulators

Filler adds volume now in a specific place. Sculptra rebuilds collagen across a region over months. For a face that has lost overall structure, Sculptra; for a specific feature, filler. Often both.

Early firming at 4 to 6 weeks, full result 3 to 6 months after the final session, as your own collagen forms.

Yes. The gel carrier gives an immediate lift; collagen stimulation builds over the following weeks and the result continues to improve.

Often up to two years or more for both, varying by person. Because the result is your own collagen it fades gradually rather than disappearing.

Radiesse diluted 1:2 was FDA-approved for the décolleté on March 31, 2026, for adults 22 and older, and the manufacturer requires completed training. Ask whether it is currently offered.

Coming soon. Renuva is an allograft adipose matrix, donated fat tissue your body replaces with its own fat, an alternative to fat grafting for cheeks, temples and hands. It is regulated as human tissue (HCT/P), not as an FDA-approved drug or device. Join the waitlist at your consultation and you will be contacted first.

After Sculptra, massage the treated area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days. It distributes the product evenly and lowers nodule risk.
